As our Statement of Faith declares, we consider the Bible to be more than just authoritative: It is absolutely reliable and inerrant in the original autographs. As such, the Bible itself is the basis for the whole Sunday School curriculum.
Our Philosophy of Adult Sunday School Ministry
As a non-denominational church with a dispensational stand in all our teaching, SFBC recognizes that our evangelical brothers and sisters from various denominations may hold views on doctrine or practice which differ from ours. While we remain committed to the distinctive positions in our Statement of Faith, we seek in our teaching to treat the views of all evangelical Christians with loving and irenic respect, so that purity and unity need not be unduly opposed to each other, thus impairing the church’s witness to the world. (John 17:23.) In other words, we believe there is a difference between contending for the faith, which is a biblical mandate (Jude 1:3), and being contentious about the faith, which is a pitfall to be avoided (1 Timothy 1:4).
Sunday School attendees of all ages and levels are equipped to understand the Scriptures first and foremost. We strive to develop a desire to know and do the will of God, as expressed in the Old and New Testaments. Our Sunday School classes equip believers so that others will be won to Christ, and believers built up in the faith. To those ends, we offer the following four upper division classes.
High School:
The High School class covers biblical doctrine and application of biblical principles to young people’s lives. Old and New Testament surveys and character studies, along with detailed exposition of selected passages, form the primary source material of this class. In addition, topical studies in subjects like decision-making, relationships, and creation/evolution equip young people to become adult members of the household of faith.
College:
The College class educates college and university students, as well as other college-age young adults, whether in school or starting careers, in the application of biblical principles to the intellectual, moral, and spiritual challenges confronting people at this stage of life. College campuses and entry-level workplaces present unique opportunities for the Christian’s growth and service. The College class follows a curriculum composed of biblical exposition and topical subjects such as apologetics, finances, wise decision-making, and discernment.
Adult I
The Adult I class follows a curriculum of systematic biblical exposition designed to familiarize students with all books of the Bible. Studies covering all Old and New Testament books examine God’s redemptive plan from Genesis to Revelation. Upon completion of this curriculum, the Bible student will have been exposed to the whole counsel of God. We recommend that students complete the Adult I curriculum before attending the Adult II class, to lay the foundation for the advanced study undertaken there.
Adult II
The Adult II class follows a generally topical curriculum designed to “take captive every thought” to Christ, by addressing contemporary practical, and doctrinal subjects from a biblical perspective. Examples of topics include evangelism, stewardship, parenting, and discipleship. Ministry-oriented Bible study and expository methods are also periodically covered. Biblical-theological topics, such as literary genres, and the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament are also considered. A believer’s lifelong growth in grace requires continuing advance in the knowledge of the Scriptures. The Adult II class challenges the mature believer to strive for deeper and more thorough understanding of the divine revelation, as the foundation for a lifetime of God-glorifying service.
English Sunday School classes meet weekly from 9:30 to 10:45 AM.
